MONTVILLE, Conn (WTNH)– White marks indicate where Sunday’s tragic accident happened and what makes it even more difficult for this family is that it’s at the foot of his grandparents driveway.
“I love him,” says Linda Smith who is Christopher Smith’s grandmother. “I’m gonna miss and I know my husband when it finally hits my husband he’s gonna really lose it.”
The sixteen year old known as CJ died after crashing his go kart which did have a roll bar at the end of his grandparent’s driveway on Caroline Road in Montville.
His cousin Sam along with another cousin were there when state police say CJ lost control of the go kart and crashed.
“They ran over tried to help him,” says Smith. “But it was just too much for them.”
Smith says CJ who was a sophomore at Ella Grasso Technical High School was studying to be an electrician.
He was also a boy scout and the oldest of four brothers.
“He tried to get over here every weekend and stay the whole weekend with us and help his grandfather. He and his grandfather just hung together like glue,” Smith says fondly.
CJ’s death remains under investigation by state police who are examining the go kart.
They haven’t released whether or not CJ was wearing a helmet and seat belt or was riding on the road which is illegal.
“They’re going to have him cremated because we just can’t afford a big funeral and everything,” says Smith.
This accident has impacted this family so much that right afterwards his grandfather sold an ATV he had at his home Sunday night.
He didn’t want anyone else to get hurt.
