NORWALK, Conn. (WTNH) — The Flutter Zone at the Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk open Saturday featuring tropical exotic butterflies.
David Sigworth spokesperson with The Maritime Aquarium said, “most of them are from Central America there may be some species from Asia and Africa and it will change over the course of the summer we will have different species in here.”
If you are lucky a butterfly may land on your shoulder or in your hair. Sigworth said, “It is a really cool experience to have these creatures so close to you or a close encounter where they actually land on you.” Don’t miss the IMAX movie “Flight of the Butterflies,” it follows the incrediable migration of Monarch butterflies from North America to Mexico. “The story follows this one researcher and he discovered a billion Monarch butterflies all clustered around the trees in Mexico,” said Sigworth.
The Maritime Aquarium will have fun activities for kids. Sigworth said, “you can make butterfly hats and we will sell you cups of milk weed which is a very imporant species of plant that’s good for Monarch butterflies.” The Flutter Zone will be fully supplied with butterflies all summer long. “we will have a little pupa hut where you can see the chrysalises of these butterflies and watch them develop and se some of them come out of their chrysalises,” added Sigworth. Plan your trip on a warm sunny day when the butterflies are active. The flutter zone opens Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
