Bill that would tax some college properties awaits Senate vote

HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — Lawmakers in the state Senate are looking over a bill that would require private tax-exempt colleges and hospitals to pay local taxes on residential property they own.

This vote all comes after a controversial video New 8 first showed you with the President of Quinnipiac University John L. Lahey hanging out at a students massive house party in April.

The bill is being pushed by House Speaker Brendan Sharkey of Hamden whose district includes Quinnipiac University

It passed the house last week. Sharkey says the host community has to pick up the tab in the form of higher property taxes.

Some lawmakers say these institutions put a strain on local municipal services and causes host communities to pick up the tab in the form of higher property taxes.
