NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — A recent Yale graduate is dead after police say he stabbed another student before jumping out of a window on College Street Tuesday morning.

Police responded to Taft Apartments at 265 College Street to investigate a stabbing and what was reported as a person who’d jumped from the building. Officials say initial reports show that Tyler Carlisle jumped from the ninth floor after stabbing his acquaintance, 21-year-old Alexander Michaud, moments earlier in an apartment.

“The University extends its deepest sympathy to the families and friends of these two members of the Yale community, and joins everyone in hoping for Alexander’s full recovery,” Yale University said in a statement.

Carlisle was found dead on the third-floor terrace. Michaud was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital where he is in stable condition.

“I think it’s a sad day because he was probably seeking help. Probably emotional, probably needed psychiatric help,” said Ricky Gonzalez of New Haven.

Carlisle was a member of the Yale Political Union.

“You could find Tyler Carlisle every Tuesday night at our debates standing up for what he believed in,” Union President Simon Brewer said in a statement. “He was a principled, honorable man and widely respected across the Union.”

Police have not said exactly what the relationship was between Carlisle and Michaud. They also have not said what led to the stabbing.
