SOUTH WINDSOR, Conn. (WTNH) — Police in South Windsor were given body cameras Tuesday.

Thanks to a grant from “Freemasons”, body cameras will now be a part of police uniforms. Just last week, the senate moved forward with a proposal that would require all law enforcement in the state to wear those devices.

South Windsor’s police chief says they will benefit the officers, as well as the public.

“We think it will enhance our accountability, it will enhance some of the trust we have with the community, and it will also help our officers because when someone does make an accusation against one of our officers, there’s nothing like being able to go to the electronic evidence to reveal what truly happened in a particular situation,” said Chief Matthew Reed.

So far, a handful of departments across the state already wear body cameras, including New London, Hamden, Hartford, Branford, and East Haven.
