Be careful of turtles crossing the roads

(WTNH) — Officials are warning you to be on the lookout for turtles crossing the roads. Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection says May and June is considered their nesting season.

They cross the roads to find a place to lay their eggs. DEEP says you can help the turtle across the road so it doesn’t get hit. But only if its safe to do so.

If you can’t help them across the road, you can pick them up by the sides of the shell and carry them to the other side.

Researchers say turtle populations have a high percentage of males. Since the females are killed on roads headed to lay eggs.
