STAMFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — Ever since appearing on the cover of “Vanity Fair,” there’s been a lot of buzz about how Bruce Jenner chose his new name “Caitlyn”. The former Olympian looked to the Miss America Pageant for inspiration, and a Miss Connecticut may just be the namesake.
Kaitlyn Tarpey was crowned Miss Connecticut in 2013. The former beauty queen is ecstatic that she may have been the inspiration behind Caitlyn Jenner’s new name.
“A girl I used to compete with posted the [Vanity Fair] article on my Facebook,” said Tarpey. “‘Hey, weren’t you the Kaitlyn in Miss America two years ago? Just some food for thought.'”
The beauty queen from Stamford was a top 10 finalist in the Miss America Pageant. Jenner told Vanity Fair she watched that competition for ideas to name herself.
“Before I performed my talent, I did say a comment that before I go out on stage, I think to myself ‘chin up, boobs up and rock it,’ and it’s just kinda like my mantra before presenting a talent performance on stage because you have to go out there, basically rock it out and be, just, like a superstar,” said the former Miss Connecticut.
When the 65-year-old spoke to Diane Sawyer as Bruce Jenner, she shared something similar.
“Girl, You gotta rock it baby,” Jenner said.
The 23-year-old counts herself as among those inspired by Caitlyn Jenner’s decision.
“It’s just one of those things where if you have the ability to have a national platform and be able to tell people, ‘love yourself, be comfortable with who you are,’ it’s what our youth and generation needs.”
