Rev. Al Sharpton to participate in Hartford rally, march

HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — The Reverend Al Sharpton, a civil rights activist, will be in Hartford for a big anti-violence march and rally this weekend.

Congregations from several North End churches will gather at Mount Moriah Church on Barbour Street Saturday afternoon, then march to Shiloh Baptist Church on Albany Avenue. Along the way, they will pass several locations where young people have been shot and killed.

Organizers call this the beginning of a movement.

“We can’t just do it as pastors, we need our congregations, we need the community,” said Pastor Dion Watkins, Mount Olive Church Ministries. “I heard one person say they want to put the neighbor back in neighborhood. That’s what we want. It takes a village to make change and it takes a village to raise families to bring family back.”

Reverend Sharpton is the president of the National Action Network.
