MYSTIC, Conn. (WTNH) When you think of Mystic you often think of tourism.
There’s even a Tourist Info Center listed on the signs welcoming visitors to the area.
But a list put out by Wallethub.com ranks Connecticut cities and towns among the lowest for summer travel.
Coming in at 73 out of 80 is Hartford-West Hartford-East Hartford while New Haven-Milford lands at 79 and Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk rounds the list out at 80.
Mystic doesn’t even make the list which looked at things like costs and hassles of getting there, attractions, and weather conditions.
“Unless you see personally you can’t figure out how good it is,” says Imran Yasin who is visiting Mystic Aquarium from Massachusetts.
In a statement, Randy Fiveash the director of the Connecticut Office of Tourism says “We respectfully disagree with the report as it favors major cities with large airports. Connecticut is a great place to visit because there are a wide range of experiences across the state… ”
Lou Farruggio from Astoria, New York agrees.
“This area didn’t make the list on somebody’s list but on my list it’s up there,” he says.
Victoria Ragsdale who works at Nice Fun Things a shop in downtown Mystic says there is plenty to do in this area.
“We’ve got shores to enjoy, coastal areas. We’ve cozy cafes, restaurants, bars, you name it,” says Raggsdale.
She strongly disagrees with the website’s report.
“Tourism is alive and well here. I mean just ask the people to that come here from the Netherlands or France or Europe,” says Ragsdale.
While for some Connecticut cities and towns like, Mystic, Hartford, New Haven, and Bridgeport are stop overs between Boston and New York for others they are a destination.
