HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — The former Republican leader of the Connecticut House of Representatives has been named to oversee the Wine and Spirits Wholesalers of Connecticut.

The organization announced Monday the former Norwalk legislator Lawrence Cafero Jr. will become the organization’s new executive director and general counsel. He starts July 1.

Cafero served 22 years in the General Assembly, the last seven as House Minority Leader. He retired in 2014, opting not to seek the Republican Party’s endorsement for governor.

An attorney, Cafero has been practicing law since 1998. Most recently, he’s been a partner in the Hartford law firm of Brown Rudnick.

The wine and spirits trade association represents wholesalers that distribute more than 85 percent of the wine and spirts sold in Connecticut. There are more than 75 distributors in the state.
