Mystic Aquarium celebrates World Oceans Day with star seals

(WTNH)–It’s World Oceans Day, which is dedicated to helping protect marine life.

With Mystic Aquarium being a huge tourist attraction in Connecticut, that means it has a big impact on our state. Feeding time at the aquarium is also a training session for seals, and it brings out the crowds.

“Our mission here at Mystic Aquarium is of course to care for and protect our ocean planet,” said Jen Rock of Mystic.

That mission was on full display this World Oceans Day. Ziggy Star the seal was living up to his name. The Northern Fur Seal is part of a popular attraction at Mystic Aquarium.

He and Coral, an Atlantic Harbor Seal entertain the masses while also educating them.

“The fact that she was a stranded animal and wasn’t able to go back into native environment and is now here and can kind of educate everyone about this depleted species,” Rock said.

That message spread through education, research, and conservation is being heard.

“I think they’re amazing creatures,” said one girl visiting Mystic.

“They’re very interesting animals,” said another.

In addition to the animals which are kept at the aquarium, those that can be released into the wild are.
