CORALVILLE, Iowa (AP) — A judge set bond at $10 million Saturday for a man charged in the shooting death of a woman at an east Iowa shopping mall.
Alexander Matthew Kozak, 22, of North Liberty, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder shortly after the Friday evening shooting. Kozak had his initial court appearance Saturday morning at the Johnson County Jail, The Iowa City Press-Citizen reported.
A judge approved Kozak’s request for a public defender before setting Kozak’s bond. The judge also set Kozak’s preliminary hearing for June 23.
Kozak is accused of shooting a 20-year-old woman at Coral Ridge Mall. The woman, whose name hasn’t been released, died at an Iowa City hospital.
Soon after the shooting near the mall’s food court, officers spotted Kozak’s car on Interstate 80 near Davenport and arrested him without incident.
Kozak’s case did not appear Saturday morning in online court records for Iowa, and it was unclear who would be appointed to serve as Kozak’s attorney.
Witnesses to the shooting told the Iowa City Press-Citizen that several shots rang out near the mall’s carousel entrance at about 7:30 p.m.
Ryan Ross, who said he works at a mall kiosk, told the Press-Citizen he recognized the shooter as a security officer who had been fired earlier in the day.
Jeff Carew, of Tiffin, said the woman was shot in the back with a handgun.
“I heard three shots and watched the girl fall,” Carew told the Press-Citizen.
He said he and others tried to stop the bleeding while another man performed CPR, Carew said.
A message left Saturday for mall officials was not immediately returned Saturday. The mall’s website said it will remain closed until further notice.
Troopers with the Iowa State Patrol and Scott County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Kozak on the interstate about 50 miles east of the mall, Iowa Department of Public Safety spokesman Alex Murphy said Friday.
Authorities do not believe there were any other suspects and said the public is no longer in danger.
Officials have not yet given a possible motive for the shooting.
The mall is along a busy stretch of Interstate 80 in Coralville, a normally quiet, suburban community of about 19,000 people in eastern Iowa. Coral Ridge is the second-largest mall in Iowa, and it has long been a regional shopping destination.
