In the Bender Kitchen: Celebrating June Dairy Month

(WTNH) — It’s June Dairy Month, time to honor the contributions the more than 47,000 dairy farm families bring to American life! CT residents appreciate what our dairy farm families of CT offer. Who doesn’t enjoy driving around our beautiful state and admiring the open space that is preserved because of farming? But in addition to those picturesque views, the farmers give us so much more! They provide nutritious and wholesome products that come from right here in our region.  They help our schools become healthier places by contributing funds to Fuel Up To Play 60 that improves the nutrition environment in school as well as help increase the physical activity opportunities offered during the school day. They also have also partnered with Feeding America which oversees most of our country’s food banks to help secure milk into the food banking system. Milk is one of the most requested, yet least donated items in food banks.

3 great ways that viewers can celebrate June Dairy Month!
1. Be a part of the Great American Milk Drive! You can join the Dairy Farm Families of Connecticut in the Great American Milk Drive and bring more nutritious milk to families in need. Next time you are in your local Stop & Shop or Price Chopper, look for donation slips in the dairy aisle. Bring that slip to check out and you’ll be able to donate to help a family in your own community get a gallon of milk. All donations will go right back to your own local food bank.

2. Get a glimpse of the life of a dairy farmer through The Dairy Good Cookbook.  This cookbook includes real profiles of the hard working dairy farm families and highlights the ways they care for their animals and land to provide wholesome milk. Recipes are categorized by the farm day. For example: sunrise, mid-day, afternoon chores and night time desserts. With a chapter on special occasions and family gatherings! There are yummy recipes, beautiful photos, and stories of the hard working dairy farm families. It’s only $25, with a portion of the proceeds going to benefit GenYOUth, a dairy farmer endorsed charity that aims to nurture children’s health and wellness in the school environment.

3. Simply toast with a glass of milk to our hard working Dairy Farm Families of CT!
