Hartford man faces 40 years in prison in roommate’s killing

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A 35-year-old Hartford man is getting a 40-year prison sentence after he pleaded guilty to murdering a roommate and putting his battered body in a duffel bag.

The Hartford Courant reports Jose Rodriguez pleaded guilty Monday under the Alford Doctrine as part of a plea agreement limiting his maximum sentence. He disputed some of the state’s evidence but agreed there was enough proof to convict him.

Rodriguez could have faced up to 60 years in prison had he stood trial.

Police say Rodriguez used a baseball bat to beat to death 56-year-old Peter Boateng in July 2013 after a dispute over rent.

His girlfriend, Meaghan Cowles, has already pleaded guilty to helping dump the body along a hiking trail in Suffield.

Rodriguez will be sentenced on Aug. 20.
