TRUMBULL, Conn. (WTNH) — A Hartford man is under arrest after a police chase through several towns ended with the suspect’s car hitting a police cruiser on the Merritt Parkway in Trumbull.
Police say they received several calls about 25-year-old Rafael Vasquez driving erratically on I-95 South in Westport Tuesday morning. An hour-long pursuit started at exit 17 when officers learned the Honda Civic he was driving had been reported stolen out of Mamaroneck, N.Y.
According to authorities, the pursuit continued onto Route 1 in Westport, causing several accidents, before he crossed into Fairfield and got back on I-95 North.
Officials say the Hampton Street man was later involved in an accident on Route 15 South after getting on at exit 53, but kept going and got off exit 50. They say he entered Route 15 North at exit 48 and was in another accident near exit 50, causing him to spin out and hit a guardrail. A Trumbull police officer boxed Vasquez in, but he continued to try getting away, hitting the police cruiser.
No one was hurt in that crash, but it’s not clear if anyone was injured in any of the other accidents.
Vasquez is charged with engaging police in a pursuit, reckless driving, third-degree larceny, interfering with police, assaulting public safety/emergency personnel, driving without a license, and other crimes. His bond was set at $50,000 and he’s scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.
