ORANGE, Conn. (WTNH) — Two people have been taken to the hospital after one was shot and another cut in the face during a road rage incident on I-95 near the Milford-Orange line Thursday night.

Just after 9 p.m., troopers responded to a report of a road rage incident on Interstate 95 northbound near the exit 41 off-ramp. State police determined that two vehicles, a passenger car and a tractor-trailer, were traveling northbound on I-95 in the area of exit 40 when the road rage incident began. The passenger car exited the highway at exit 41, while the tractor-trailer polled over to the right shoulder of the highway.

Officials say the tractor-trailer driver then got out of his truck and ran up to the driver’s side of the car while it was stopped at the traffic light at the end of the exit ramp. The truck driver allegedly struck the driver of the car with an unknown object, causing a cut to the car driver’s face, according to a press release from state police.

As the truck driver tried to return to his truck, the driver of the car got out and chased after the truck driver. While pursuing the truck driver, the car driver withdrew a 9-millimeter semi-automatic pistol (for which he had a valid pistol permit), and fired several rounds.

State police say the truck driver was struck several times. He was able to get back into his truck, and then left the scene. Troopers caught up with the truck driver in the area of exit 44 in West Haven.

Both male operators were taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital with what were described as non-life threatening injuries.

“You don’t know what people have on them or what they are thinking at that time,” said Trooper Kelly Grant. “If you feel that you need to get away from them, absolutely do that. Take the nearest exit, get off the highway, go to a well populated area, call 911, stay in your vehicle with windows rolled up and doors locked.”

Authorities say no charges have been filed yet against either driver. Charges will be determined as detectives continue to investigate.

If you witnessed this incident, or have any information that could help state police with their investigation, you’re asked to call Connecticut State Police Troop G at 203-696-2565. All calls will be kept confidential.
