AVON, Conn. (WTNH) — A woman was sexually assaulted while jogging in Avon just after noon Thursday, police say.
According to authorities, the woman in her early 30’s was running on the Rails to Trails just south of Scoville Road when she was dragged off the path and into the woods, where she was sexually assaulted.
Police describe the suspect as a approximately 5’6″ tall, white male with a goatee. They say he wore a reflective vest over a black shirt, sunglasses, and a baseball cap.
Female runners and bikers who use the trails say they thought it was safe, but now they’re rethinking.
“I feel like on a bike, I’m cruising pretty well,” said Karen Yorski. “This is scary that something like this would happen, but I could see were somebody would think it’s an opportunity.”
Some say they’ll take extra precautions while exercising.
“You think you are safe here,” said Eileen Zelazny. “It’s a really kind of a bucolic kind of community. There’s so many people on this trail all the time; it’s just so unfortunate and I hope the woman is all right.”
Officials say they’re following up on some very good leads. They expect to have a sketch of the suspect ready for a Friday morning news conference.
