Snow in South Africa June 2015

Winter in the Southern Hemisphere is June, July, August. So June would be the same as December for us. South Africa got the brunt of some arctic (or Antarctic) blasts and it actually snowed there multiple times this month.

Here are some images from the facebook page of SnowReportSA of the snow that fell on June 27, 2015.

Also good to note that snow fell there June 3, June 11th, June 18th as well.

This is mostly above 5000 feet but whats interesting is that South Africa is surrounded by the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans so cold air moderates by the time it hits South Africa. So lower elevations don’t benefit from snows this early.

I was looking at the 850mb temps and it’s not below freezing below 4500′, but is below freezing above 6000′. Hence the snow falling down to at least 5500′

But it does look like Ski resorts there have been enjoying Winter already.
