Fallout from Hartford basketball tournament shooting

HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — Fallout continues after a gunman opened fire at the Heat on the Street basketball tournament in Hartford on Saturday. Police say the tournament’s founder, Maurice Eastwood, never told them about the event and they never obtained a permit.

“I’m a good person. I did nothing wrong,” Eastwood said in a press conference he held Tuesday.

According to authorities, a fight over sunglasses escalated to gunfire. Three were shot. James Headen, 41, died from a gunshot to the head.

“We spoke to the [Headen] family and they showed a lot of love,” said organizer Taurean Minnifield.

“I apologize for not having police officers here, but if the legislatures, the people I reached out to would reach out back to me I would have known it was mandatory to have police officers. I did not know that,” said Eastwood.

Eastwood held the same event last year. He did not have a permit, but he says police showed up to move illegally parked cars. He says his intentions were pure. He wanted a community get together. Hundreds came to play and watch. They gave away bikes for kids, food, and accepted clothing donations for those in need in Jamaica.

“I was out here from 7 [in the morning] and this incident happened a little after 4, so for the police officers to say they knew nothing about that, how much community policing are they really doing?” said Eastwood.

Minnifield said they plan on having a tournament next year in honor of the man who died.
