Sprinkler legislation passes in special session

HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — A bill passed in the legislature’s special session aims to keep tenants safe in a fire, requiring landlords to let residents know if there is a working sprinkler system in their building.

Jeffrey Block of Watertown was the driving force behind the legislation. His 21-year-old daughter, Eva, died in an off-campus fire while away at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. The house where it happened did not have a sprinkler system.

“The bit of awareness they’re going to get, they’re going to be notified now whether they have an active or inactive sprinkler system in their facility and when the last date of inspection will just maybe pique a little bit of interest at this point, just to make their aware of their surroundings,” Block said.

Landlords will have to post in their buildings whether there is a working sprinkler system, and if one exists, when it was last inspected, starting in October.
