(WTNH)– Walmart is apologizing after they refused a Louisiana man’s request for a Confederate flag cake but made one with a design of the ISIS flag.
Chuck Netzhammer told ABC News that on Thursday he ordered a cake with an image of the Confederate flag from a Walmart bakery in Slidell, Louisiana. He wanted the cake to show the Confederate flag with the words “Heritage Not Hate.”
He says the bakery denied that request but at some point later he went back and ordered a cake with the image of the ISIS flag, which represents the terrorist group. That order was accepted.
“That’s an ISIS battle flag cake that anybody can go buy at Walmart. But you can’t buy a Confederate flag toy, with like, say, a ‘Dukes of Hazzards’ car,” Netzhammer says in a video he posted on YouTube, showing the cake.
Walmart told ABC News that “an associate in a local store did not know what the design meant and made a mistake. The cake should not have been made and we apologize.”
Walmart, along with other companies like Amazon, Etsy and eBay, all banned the sales of Confederate flag merchandise last week, after the shooting death of nine people in a Charleston church by a racist gunman, who wore the flag in photos.
Walmart announced their ban by saying in a statement “We never want to offend anyone with the products that we offer. We have taken steps to remove all items promoting the Confederate flag from our assortment — whether in our stores or on our web site.”
As for Netzhammer, he says Walmart is “alienating Southern Americans.”
