Man arrested after fleeing from crash in Willimantic

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. (WTNH)– A Willimantic man was arrested Sunday afternoon after fleeing the scene of a crash.

According to police, officers investigated a two car head-on crash on Jackson Street shortly before 3. A driver of one of the cars then fled on foot leaving his injured girlfriend in the passenger side of the car.

Police say the man, 53 year old Albert Hawley, was found by officers while trying to hide in a nearby apartment complex shortly after. Police requested a K-9 unit, but called the unit off after Hawley was located.

Hawley was arrested without incident. His girlfriend was taken to Windham Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Police tell News 8 intentionally left his girlfriend in the car after the crash.

Police say the two females in the other car involved weren’t injured in the crash. Hawley was charged with failure to drive right, operating without a license, and evading responsibility. The road reopened about an hour after the crash.
