NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Drivers who properly yielded to pedestrians at a certain New Haven intersection were rewarded with gift cards on Tuesday.

New Haven’s Department of Transportation, Traffic, and Parking teamed up with the New Haven Police Department to host the safe driving initiative. Drivers who stopped for pedestrians at the Corner of Orange and Court Streets were given gift card to Tikkaway Grill. Those who didn’t were given a written warning. Many say this initiative is overdue.

“I have a child in daycare a few blocks up on the corner of Orange and Wall Streets and there is also a pedestrian walkway,” said Christina Kriegel. “Every time I am there with my babies, people just race by.”

“I look at the cars coming at me and feel like I will get run over. I am glad they are enforcing it,” said Deborah Hilts. “It is a great walking city and I think it is important. Pedestrians have rights as well as cars.”

“I think drivers for too long have been a little too aggressive, so I think it is great to see the police finally doing something about that,” said Rob Berman.

Go New Haven Go, the city’s resource for sustainable commuting, sponsored the event.
