New Haven Police Investigate Shooting at Rap Contest

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)- Police are investigating after gunfire erupted at what witness are calling a “rap contest” over the weekend. It happened at the basketball court on Derby Ave and the Ella T. Grasso Boulevard.

Witnesses told police the shooting happened because the contest organizer wasn’t paying money promised to contest winners. When officers responded to a 911 call, they located a 21-year-old victim from Stamford who had been shot. The victim told police he started running away when he hear the shots, got into his car, but his windshield was hit and that’s when he realized he had been shot too.

Police say there wasn’t a permit filed to use the space, and the event was held in violation of city ordinances.

Police do not have a description of the people involved, and haven’t found any weapons.
