New Haven police investigate 11th homicide of 2015

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)– New Haven police are investigating a homicide on Bouchet Lane that occurred Wednesday evening.

According to police, officers were dispatched in the Eastern Street area, in a public housing complex next to the Bella Vista retirement community, regarding gunfire shortly before 10:30 p.m. Officers located the victim, 35-year-old Lawrence Allen Atkins, on the ground with a gunshot wound to his shoulder.

Atkins was rushed to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he was pronounced dead around 11:25 p.m. Officer say he was alone when they found him.

“It just shocked me because I looked out the window and then I see a whole bunch of people, a lot of screaming about ‘He got hit!’ Seen two cars take off in the dark, couldn’t tell what kind of cars they were,” said Albert Parks, New Haven.

Police say the victim, Atkins, lived on Plymouth Street on the other side of New Haven.
