WEST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Police are investigating a shooting that happened in West Haven on Thursday afternoon.

According to authorities, a 24-year-old man, whose identity has not been released, was shot in the back while standing on the porch of 667 Washington Avenue. The victim was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening. Police say they haven’t been able to interview him because he is in surgery. They also say this type of thing doesn’t typically happen in this part of town.

“It’s a relatively quiet neighborhood. We don’t usually have incidents of this nature here,” said Lt. Robert Proto. “It probably comes as quite a surprise to these people.”

Neighbors were in fact surprised. They gathered around the yellow police tape that blocked off the street for several hours.

“Especially this street down here, it’s a very quiet area,” said Ralph Schultze, who works nearby. “I can’t understand what’s going on with all these guns, gun violence, everything. It’s got to be stopped.”

Police don’t yet know why the victim was attacked. Patricia Campaniolo, who knows him, says he didn’t deserve it.

“He’s a nice young man, quiet, keeps to himself,” she said.

Autorities say two suspects drove away in a small, dark-colored car, but neighbors are not in any danger.
