HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — A Hartford man is dead after police used a Taser on him and EMS gave him a sedative on Friday night.
“I feel sorry,” said Heribertito Rodriguez.
Officials say Hartford police, EMS, and mobile crisis team personnel responded to 26-year-old Matthew Russo’s Kelsey Street home for a medical-related disturbance around 8:30 p.m. They say he fought with the emergency personnel, at which time he was hit with the Taser and given the sedative. He then began to have trouble breathing and was taken to Hartford Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to authorities.
“The guy should have been more calm. He should not have acted like he did. He would not have been tasered, sorry,” said Rodriguez.
State police detectives from the Western District Major Crime Squad are investigating the death, which they call untimely.
“The police pass through everyday; that situation was the first,” said Junior Guzman, who lives a block from Russo’s home.
State police say the medical examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.
