WEST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)- Connecticut is known for its beautiful shoreline, but South Street Beach in West Haven is getting a dirty reputation. Jim Cook said, “I was disgusted as soon as we came down here today.”
News 8 found whiskey bottels, empty beer cases, plastic bags, cigarette butts and even dirty diapers within inches of the shoreline.
“It’s terrible but also people themselves should really cleanup after themselves,” said Jackie Macisco. The trash is not only an eyesore but parents say the broken glass is dangerous. Theresa Villabonna added, “I try to clean away what ever I can on my side there are cans that they could potentially step on and cut their feet.”
“It’s not safe or clean the kids should not be playing around in this garbage,” said Dante Villabonna.
Locals are appalled garbage gets left on the beach and they want it cleaned up.
Cook added, “I wish they would have a few more garbage bins upfront that would help a little bit.”
“This is a result of the weekend here in West Haven,” said West Haven mayor Edward O’Brien. “But it is a big concern about the trash that is left here. This is unacceptable, but there is a reason for it. We are out here cleaning everyday.”
