(WTNH) – Students in Monroe are heading back to school Thursday and there is a high-tech tool that school administrators say will keep them safe.
It’s called School Gate Guardian. Monroe is one of nine districts using it state-wide.
Before a visitor is allowed on campus, a device will scan the person’s license and check it against a national sexual predator database. It also searches court orders that would restrict a person’s access to schools.
“Two things come out of this that I think are important,” says Jim Agostine, Superintendent of Schools in Monroe. “One, this prevents someone who is inappropriate from picking up a child at our schools but also registers every person who comes into our building during the school day.”
In the event of an emergency, first responders can use the device to help them track down everyone who entered the building and make sure they are safe.
