HADDAM, Conn. (WTNH) — An East Hampton man is dead after a tractor-trailer crash on Route 9 in Haddam around 6:15 a.m. Friday.

State police say 56-year-old David Canfield was driving his truck northbound near exit 8 when he lost control, went off the shoulder into a guardrail, down an embankment, and into a tree.

The northbound side of Route 9 was shut down for almost three hours between exits 8 and 9 to allow a LifeStar emergency medical helicopter to reach the scene. However, the Hills Avenue was pronounced dead at the scene.

Firefighters along with crews from the state Department of Transportation worked to remove tree brush in order to extricate the driver from the cab of the truck. Officials are continuing their investigation to determine why the driver lost control.

Route 9 was reopened to traffic around 9:40 a.m.
