West Haven locals say mold problems persist in Spring Realty apartment building

WEST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Mold and standing water are just some of the problems at the Spring Realty apartments located at 208 Greta Street. Tonya Austin’s mother lives in the building and says the smell it so strong that it “gives you a headache.”

Residents say the mold has been there for years. Those who live in the building say the management company ignores the leaks or simply puts a band-aid it by cleaning it up and wrapping rags around the leaky pipes.

“It’s either a bunch of water or a bunch of mold and it really really stinks,” Austin said.

Ron says his girlfriend has lived in the building nine years and says it has always been the same situation.

“Just this morning when I was taking the garbage out I’ve seen a bunch of water dripping, I don’t know where it come from whether it’s the humidity or if the pipes are leaking i see it in the hallways,” said Ron.

West Haven residents say they have to walk through the water on the ground floor to get to their first floor apartments. There’s water leaking from the pipes and on the ceiling mold.

Linda Lee with the property management company, Spring Realty acknowledges there is a problem. “Yes, we do have a problem right here and it is being addressed,” said Lee.

Residents tell us it is not fast enough.

They are also seeing problem in the laundry room.

“I have asthma too so it makes it hard for me to breathe down there, especially when you are down there for a while and you have to wash clothes,” said Chasity Moore, another tenant.

Tenants say they are on a fixed income and feel trapped with nowhere else to go. Others didn’t want to go on camera fearing retaliation.
