WATERFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection has been notified after 1 gallon of sodium hydroxide leaked onto the pavement at the I-95 weigh station in Waterford.

The spill happened as the operator of the tractor trailer was attempting to shift the load. The plastic cylinder containing the sodium hydroxide fell off the trailer, and resulted in a small leak.

Sodium hydroxide is one of the main ingredients used in cleaning agents.

The cylinder is still leaking but has been contained to the pavement.

DEEP officials say a team has been notified to clean the spill and no environmental threat has been reported.
