OAKLAND, Calif. (WTNH)– Police in California smashed open a car window to save a baby trapped inside only to discover it was actually a doll.

According to ABC News, on Monday emergency personnel in Oakland smashed the car window and forced their way inside a car after they mistook a lifelike doll for a real baby sitting in the car seat.

“Although this incident did not involve a baby or small child, it was unknown at the time. And first responders’ number one priority is to ensure safety,” Officer Johnna Watson, of the Oakland Police Department, told ABC News.

The officer adds that while it was fortunate it wasn’t an actual baby, she encourages anyone who believes there to be a dangerous situation, such as a baby trapped in a hot car, to call emergency personnel.

It is unknown why the doll was in the car seat or if police spoke with the car’s owner before smashing through the window.
