COLUMBUS (WCMH) — Two handguns were taken from a student at Sherwood Middle School in Columbus Wednesday morning.
According to Columbus City Schools spokesperson Jeff Warner, the principal of the school received an anonymous tip indicating that a student was going to bring a weapon to school.
As parent was dropping off the student, both the principal and a safety and security officer met up with the student and discovered the gun. The gun was secured and the student taken into custody.
Police described that gun as a loaded 9mm handgun.
The school went under a precautionary lockdown and all lockers in the school were searched.
According to Warner, a second gun was found in another student’s locker. The student assigned to that locker was also taken into custody.
Parents of students at the school were notified of the situation through an auto-dial phone message.
A letter will be sent home to parents later in the afternoon, according to Warner.
The lockdown was lifted after all lockers were searched.
