Woman pleads guilty in trash bin disposal of newborn baby

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A 19-year old Connecticut woman who police say disposed of her dead newborn boy in a trash bin last year has pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter.

The Hartford Courant reports Geralyz Sotomayor-Cruz entered the plea Tuesday and faces a sentence of 10 years in prison, suspended after 18 months.

Police said the East Hartford woman, who was 18 at the time, hid her pregnancy from her family because she was afraid of how her mother would react.

Prosecutors say she gave birth to the boy on Aug. 12, 2014 at her Tolland Street home, put him in a plastic trash bag and carried it to a garbage bin outside the house. Officials determined the newborn died of asphyxia and ruled the death a homicide.

Sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 30.
