Ellington Student Dies White Water Rafting

ELLINGTON, Conn. (WTNH)– The Superintendent of Ellington Schools Scott Nicol says one of their students died over the weekend.

Nicol said, “On Saturday September 5th, Ellington High School freshman Jordyn Engler was in a white water rafting accident with her father Jeff in upsate New York. Tragically, Jordyn has succumbed to her injuries and passed away. Her father is currently in intensive care in the hospital.”

The Ulster County, New York Sheriff’s Department says they were called to Espous Creek in Shandaken, NY at approximately 11:15 a.m.for two people in distress in the water. Dive teams were able to rescue the adult male but had to wait until water flow from a nearby reservoir that goes into the creek was turned off and the water level lowered before they could recover the juvenile female.

The school system is providing counselors for any students or community members who may be in need. They will be at Ellington High School, from 10 to 1 PM in library media center.

“Our prayers and thoughts go out to the Engler family and friends,” said Nicol.
