Voters head to the polls across Connecticut for Primary Day

HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH)– Voters are heading to the polls today for Primary Day to cast their ballot in the 25 elections across the state.

Many of the mayoral races are being looked at closely, specifically in Hartford where Pedro Segarra is running for re-election. He’s being challenged by attorney Luke Bronin. Voters in the capital city tell News 8 they came out to vote in the primary since it is such a close race.

“It’s going to be close. They’re both strong contenders,” said Mimi Cardwell of Hartford.

News 8 spoke with both candidates as they heading to their polling locations to vote earlier today.

“It is a challenge to be a mayor, a sitting mayor and having to deal with the ongoing work of being a mayor as well as running a campaign,” said Segarra.

“We’ve worked hard for many months,” said Bronin. We’ve done everything we can do.”

In Bridgeport Bill Finch is running for re-election. But so is former Mayor Joe Ganim, who served time in federal prison on corruption charges.

There are also races in New London and West Haven that are being closely watched.

As a reminder, polls are open until 8 p.m.
