EAST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Judy Esposito and Carol Scussel have been friends for four decades and both share their admiration for the pope.
The two even went to see Pope John Paul II when he made a trip to New York City in 1995. They still have the newspaper article with them on the front page from that visit.
The two friends also saw Pope Benedict twice and next week, they will be making the trip to Philadelphia to see Pope Francis as he makes his first trip to the United States as pontiff.
“We say to each other all the time we’re together would you believe this is going to be our third pope? We just don’t believe it. People don’t believe it,” said Esposito.
Scussel says seeing the holy father in person is something that she holds very dear to her. “It’s just magical. It’s just unbelievable and the feeling you get you can’t even describe it. Something overcomes you.”
Both acknowledge that Pope Francis has brought change to the Catholic Church, something that they see as beneficial. “He’s good for our young people and hopefully he’s going to bring our young people back into the church. He’s very outgoing you know he’s very down to earth,” said Scussel.
