Homicide suspect arrested after Bridgeport traffic stop

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (WTNH) — A routine traffic stop turned into a high-speed chase in Bridgeport Thursday, resulting in the arrest of a suspect in a homicide investigation.

Officers witnessed 32-year-old Cewell Sharpe of Bridgeport failing to stop at a stop sign. Sharpe was pulled over by police, but then quickly sped off.

Officers pursued Sharpe’s red Toyota Corolla along Park Avenue, Harral Avenue, and Coleman Street. According to police, the car then swerved and struck a unoccupied vehicle before it continued onto I-95 Northbound.

Sharpe continued to drive evasively, causing his car to collide with another responding police officer’s cruiser. Both cars to struck a center concrete barrier, police said.

Sharpe was taken into custody, while the passenger in his car was eventually released without charges.

The officer who’s cruiser crashed into the barrier was taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital. His condition is not being released at this time.
