Kevin Arnone joined Storm Team 8 in April 2014 as a weather producer and executive producer of WXEdge.com. Recently, you may have seen Kevin filling in on-air.
Kevin was born and raised in Orange, CT. He Graduated from Amity High School. From there, Kevin went to study Meteorology at Western Connecticut State University, graduating in 2012 with a B.S. in Operational Meteorology and Weathercasting. Before he joined the staff of News 8 in 2014, Kevin was an intern at WTNH from 2011-2012.
Kevin has lived in Connecticut his entire life. His weather interest started at a very young age. He was 9 years old and on vacation in Florida when a tornado came through a mile from where his family was staying. Even since that event, all he ever wanted to do was learn about weather.
He grew up watching News 8, was a huge Dr. Mel fan. Kevin has a book signed by Dr. Mel where he wrote, “To a future Meteorologist”. Kevin admits he was always the last one inside whenever bad weather was coming through; and then his family would have trouble getting him away from the windows because he loved to watch storms.
Kevin is a huge baseball (Yankee) fan, and has worked as an umpire for local baseball leagues since he was 12-years-old. You can now catch Kevin as an umpire for High School Varsity and College games. He’s a big fan of bowling too. Kevin bowls in 3 leagues, and has actually bowled a few perfect games in his life.
In his spare time, Kevin enjoys going to Yankee games, flying his drone, and taking care of his 3 giant fish tanks.
8 Things you didn’t know about Kevin Arnone
Favorite memory / story from working as a meteorologist?
My favorite memory is Hurricane Sandy. I was fresh out of college and was a WXedge contributor. During Sandy, My friend Phil Reynolds and I went down to the shoreline in Milford, and he recorded me doing live weather forecasts with my Iphone. I sent in the videos to WTNH and I was featured on the News. Favorite memory since I have been at the station was the blizzard in January 2015. It was my first big snowstorm since being at the station and it was a wild 48 hours of coverage. I worked a ton of hours, didn’t sleep much but it was so much a lot of fun to be a part of. (I’m a big winter lover)
What inspired you to work in television weather?
It’s a funny story, well kind of. My love for weather started when I was 9, a tornado came through the area where my family and I were staying while on vacation in Florida. Luckily no one was hurt but this one event certainly made an impression on me. I wanted to learn about weather. I can remember being in elementary school and giving my fellow students and teachers the forecast for an upcoming snow event. I watched News 8 growing up and I use to block the TV when Dr. Mel was on and give my own forecast to my family. If I wasn’t a Meteorologist, I always wanted to be an astronaut, but to be honest with you, I don’t like to fly 😉
What is your favorite restaurant in New Haven?
Believe it or not, I just started eating sushi when I started at News 8 in April of 2014. I fell in love with it quickly. You can catch me at Kumo across the street at least twice a week.
Who is your favorite musician/ band and/or best concert you ever been to?
My first concert that I remember was the Rolling Stones. I have been to a ton of concerts though, so it’s hard to pick just one. I can listen to Phil Collins all day, he’s probably my favorite musician. However, I’m a huge country music fan so Eric Church is certainly a close second. I will say, of all the concerts I have attended, Eric Church was by far the best performer.
What’s the best dish you can make?
I love to cook steak and burgers on the grill. But my best dish has to be my buffalo chicken meatballs.
If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?
My goal is to visit every state in America. I think I’m close to half way there. The good news is, I have Alaska out of the way. If you have a chance to visit Alaska, do it! It is beautiful! I’d also like to attend every MLB ballpark too.
What’s something you don’t know about me?
I have a Mini Goldendoodle named Mookie and two fish tanks!
What are your hobbies / hidden talents?
My hidden talent is certainly bowling, well it’s not really hidden if you saw the package the sports guys did on me! I have been bowling in leagues and tournaments since I was 18 years old. I currently average around a 222 and I’m lucky enough to have had 3 perfect games. My best 3 game series was 816. I shot a 279, 258, 279.
