FAIRFIELD, Conn. (WTNH)– A tractor trailer truck slid off I-95 in Fairfield Wednesday morning and went down an embankment, trapping the driver inside.
Fairfield Police say around 6:45 a.m., a large eighteen wheeler Doritos truck traveling on I-95 northbound near exit 23 slid in the right lane and went down an embankment, jackknifing on Meadow Street, behind the Edge fitness. The truck did not hit the gym.
“The driver was trapped in the cab but responsive” according to Assistant Chief Schuyler Sherwood who was Incident Commander. “There were multiple transformers and power lines down alongside Meadow Street due to the accident and rainfall was at its heaviest morning as we arrived.”
State police and fire crews extricated the driver using a Stokes basket before he was transported by ambulance to St. Vincent’s Hospital. The extent of his injuries is unknown at this time.
The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and United Illuminating were also called to the scene to assist in containment of the spill and control of the power lines, which were made more dangerous from the heavy rainfall. Bud’s Truck & Diesel Service later had several heavy wreckers on the scene to remove the cab and then secure the trailer for removal. The truck was heavily damaged.
The incident is still under investigation by the state police.
