Choppy Seas Today, Coastal Flooding

Due to a strong high pressure to the north and low pressure to the south, we have a very strong pressure gradient. This will be causing a few days of strong northeast winds. An upper level low is soaking parts of the mid Atlantic with record rain. This low will be riding along a stalled front off the east coast. In CT, we will not be seeing major impacts from this system, just a few showers (heavy at times) that will be riding along the front. Much of the rain will fall during the day on Friday, we should dry out during the day on Saturday. With Hurricane Joaquin in the minds of many, I just wanted to remind everyone that the rain and wind we will be getting over the next 24 hours has nothing to do with Joaquin. We will not be seeing flooding in CT due to heavy rain but  the shoreline may see minor coastal flooding because of higher tides. Whenever we have winds with an easterly component for a long period of time, generally we see coastal flooding. The National Weather Service has issued a Coastal Flood Watch for Fairfield County. Tides will run 2 feet above normal. Even though the Flood watch is just for Fairfield county, everyone from Greenwich to Madison should monitor the tide levels. Along with the higher tides, the Long Island Sound is very choppy. Seas will likely be 2-5 Feet with winds gusting 20-40 kts at times. This will continue though the weekend. Below are the next few high tide times that should be watched.

Tide times to watch along the coastline from Greenwich to Madison

Friday: 2:55 PM – 3:21 PM

Saturday: 3:30 AM – 3:56 AM

Saturday: 3:53 PM – 4:19 PM

Sunday: 4:30 AM – 4:56 PM

Sunday: 4:54 PM – 5:20 PM
