Six deaths blamed on historic flooding

COLUMBIA, SC (WCBD) – South Carolina Emergency Management Department has confirmed six deaths related to the flooding caused by massive rains over the weekend.

According to Richland County Coroner Gary Watts, the deaths include a woman whose body was found near Sunset Boulevard early Sunday.

A South Carolina Department of Transportation employee was also killed Sunday while overseeing work.

According to Watts, 45-year-old Timothy Wayne Gibson was on Garners Ferry Road.

The highway patrol updated its toll Monday, saying four have been killed on roads in weather related incidents.

“One motorist struck a tree,” said Derrec Becker with SCEMD. “One drowned in a vehicle when floodwaters rushed so quickly.”
