Two teens steal car, try running down police officer

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Two juveniles have been charged after police say they stole a car and then tried to run down a police officer on Friday.

New Haven police received a report at 5 p.m. Friday that a car had been stolen with the keys from Main Street. An hour later, officers found the car parked on Star Street, near Winchester Avenue. The officers parked their cruiser to block in the car, and began to approach it. The juvenile behind the wheel of the car began to drive toward the officer, almost hitting him. He hit the police cruiser, and continued to drive away.

The officers tried to find the car, but could not. They then received several reports that a car crashed into a wall and traffic sign at Cold Spring and Canner Streets. The officers say it was the car they had been looking for. They saw the two young men walking on Mitchell Drive and witnesses identified them as having fled from the crashed car. The two 17-year-old juveniles were charged with criminal attempt to commit assault on a police officer, auto theft, and motor vehicle offenses.
