NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — If you own a Jeep Wrangler, New Haven Police have a warning for you, keep a close eye on your doors.
Authorities tell News 8 there’s been a spike in Wrangler door thefts in the Elm City, items valued around $1,000 a piece! They’re crimes Oren Shorkey of Hamden Auto Body isn’t surprised by.
“It’s designed so the customer can really just take the door, take it off, and drive with the doors off,” said Shorkey. “It’s really designed to be easy for the consumer to take it off.”
Just how easy? If a thief is able to unlock the doors it only takes seconds for the doors to be removed.
“You just open the door, pop the release, and off you go,” said Shorkey.
Juha Sarimaa a resident of Mystic, says he’s not concerned about his doors being a potential target for theft. It’s Sarimaa’s belief when you own a Wrangler theft is simply a risk you take.
“They can take the spare tire as well, there’s no lock for the fuel here as well so if they want it they’re going to just take it,” said Sarimaa.
But for those looking to increase the odds of safeguarding their doors, back in Hamden, Shorkey says you have options.
“There are several companies out there that make locks that go in the bottom of the hinges, like I said, it’s not fool proof but it’s just going to make it more difficult,” said Shorkey.
You can find kits for many of those locks online. They often run anywhere from $25 to $45 for a pair.
New Haven police add there have been four reported thefts so far and they don’t believe any specific neighborhood is being targeted.
