(WTNH)– Selena Gomez is trending after she revealed that her break from the spotlight was because she was undergoing chemotherapy after being diagnosed with lupus.

The 23-year-old singer/actress told Billboard that despite the various rumors of why she took time-off, the real reason was that she needed to deal with her illness.

“I was diagnosed with lupus, and I’ve been through chemotherapy. That’s what my break was really about. I could’ve had a stroke,” Gomez told Billboard.

Gomez added that she wanted “so badly” to address the people who made assumptions about her hiatus because they had no idea what she was really going through.

“I locked myself away until I was confident and comfortable again,” she said.

The singer is now back to work. She is releasing a new album on October 9th and announced a world tour on her Instagram. She even used the negative attention to inspire her comeback.

Gomez said “it’s so disappointing that I’ve become a tabloid story. That hate motivated me.”
