The chance for a few strong storms this afternoon into the evening are possible. Stay ahead of the storms by downloading the WXedge App for your smart phone. A cold front will approach the region from the west early afternoon, moving across the state this evening. Behind the front, high pressure will build in, bringing with it nice weather for the weekend. But first we have a few storms to talk about. Winds ahead of the front will be from the SW today, this will allow for temperatures to be above average in the low 70s. There will be a touch of humidity too. With a lot of instability in the atmosphere this afternoon, as the front approaches we will see showers and the possibility for a few thunderstorms.
The time frame for today’s weather is 3 PM – 9 PM from west to east. Some of the storms have the chance to be strong and go severe. With instability in place, strong winds aloft, the Storm Prediction Center out of Oklahoma has put Connecticut under a 2% chance for a tornado and 5% chance for damaging winds. Although 2% may not seem high, there have been times a tornado touched down in the past with a lower percentage. Winds are forecast to gust upwards to 40 mph at times this afternoon and evening. That being said, I think the main concerns today will be gusty winds. It’s not likely we will see a tornado, but just be aware this afternoon.
