HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A three-foot-long python that startled a Hartford family after they discovered it in their kitchen has been safely returned to its owner.

Police say an animal control officer was called to the Deerfield Avenue home after the family called police Thursday morning. The snake’s owner lives nearby and realized the exotic reptile was missing after seeing a large snake had been found nearby.

Police say the snake — named Bertha — accidentally escaped and that the owner appears to take good care of the snake. The owner was issued a verbal warning not to let the reptile get loose again. No criminal charges are expected.
