(WTNH)– Thinking about adding another member to your family? October is “Adopt a Shelter Dog” month. We’ve got your back today with a pre-adoption checklist.

  • Adoption center officials say consider how a dog will fit into your household.
  • Be aware of the commitment it entails.
  • Make sure to look at your work schedule and determine how much time you can actually devote to a pet’s needs.
  • For people in rental units – make sure to ask your landlord if a dog falls within the property’s guidelines.

“You should have an idea of the size of dog that you can have. The amount of space you have in your home that can accommodate a dog. Keep in mind how much dog food costs, and where you want to get that food,” said Mark Goodhart, Homeward Trails Adoption Center Director.

Other costs to keep in mind – routine vet visits, vaccines and unexpected emergency care.
