Man gets 40-year sentence after admitting he strangled wife

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (AP) — A 43-year-old New Britain man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison after pleading guilty to strangling his wife to death in the couple’s home.

Luis Velez pleaded guilty to murder earlier this year as part of an agreement. Prosecutors say he admitted to detectives that he “squeezed the life out of” 33-year-old Johana Gallego with his hands and tightened a belt from a terry cloth robe around her neck to make sure she was dead.

Prosecutors unsuccessfully attempted to bring a capital felony charge against Velez, who served 16 years in a Puerto Rico prison for a fatal shooting and three years for vehicle homicide.

Velez said nothing when given the opportunity to speak. A public defender says Velez expressed remorse for the killing immediately following the crime.
